Like most of you, the valuable aspect of my week was attending the FBLA conference. I was not involved with FBLA in high school and attending the conference showed me how much the organization can benefit students. I couldn't believe how many students are involved! It is obvious that a lot of planning goes into the conference and many people are needed to make it run smoothly. I definitely hope to be taking my future students to it! After returning from the conference, I was very pleased with the sub's report. There were no major behavior issues and each class completed what I left for them. The kids were even happy to see me on Thursday!
On Wednesday after the conference was over, I attend a teaching fair at Millersville University. I was hoping to at least find out about a few possible job openings and leave my application with those schools. Overall, it went ok but I wish I could go back and not even have talked to one of the schools or at least the person I spoke with. After waiting in line to talk to this particular school, I got to speak with the school's superintendent. From the beginning of our talk, it seemed that he did not have much knowledge of Business Education courses or just didn't care for them. His first comment to me was that the district had a BE teacher retiring, but that they probably won't rehire someone to fill the spot. Not very encouraging for me! After more conversation, I just wanted to move on to another school and wished I hadn't even stopped and met with anyone from the school. However, as I was getting up to leave the district's table, the superintendent gave me the phone number for his assistant. He instructed me to call her periodically to see if they have decided to fill the open position. It wasn't the best experience, but at least from now on job opportunities should only get better!

I totally agree with the amount of planning that goes into something like FBLA. It was enough of a challenge to keep 14 students from Selinsgrove organized with the help of my co-op, let alone make something like that conference go smoothly. It was definitely a learning experience, and something that I look forward to being a part of in the future (as long as I can get my own room next time!)
ReplyDeleteAside from that, I also had very few problems with any type of bad behavior based on the sub's report; it's just that I don't think she pushed the students to work very much so they got away with doing as little as possible overall. There were still the students who are self-motivated though, so that just made the adjustment even more difficult when it came time to try to get my students and my classes all back on the same page. Regardless, it was a very good learning process!
Testing out our websites before our students is something we should do on a daily basis. I have checked some sites one day, and the next day they are either blocked or have an offensive advertisement on the side.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you thought quickly and went to wikispaces. Sometimes we need to have a Plan A, Plan B, and a Plan C. Your reflections are very on target with what we learn during our Professional Semester.
I am glad to hear that your sub report was good and that your students behaved for him or her. I have had a chance to speak with some substitute teachers and they have told me how students sometimes just stop caring when a sub is in for a few days. I found the FBLA conference to be a good learning experience as well. I was evolved with it in high school and always enjoyed it. One day I hope to get my students to be active FBLA members as well. Good to hear things are going good. Have a great week. See you Monday!
ReplyDeleteCassie, you never know, that guy could call you yet. It would be a great story if they hired you and you were the one to start a fantastic business program at their school. I think you are the girl for the job! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how well the FBLA went overall. It must takes a lot of planning to organize such an event.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that everything went well for you regarding the students. I too had a good report when I returned.
Have a great week 13!
I also was not in FBLA in high school and being able to be view it first hand was amazing. Great amount of planning involved by teachers and by the students.
ReplyDeleteThat meeting sounded like an experience by itself. Don’t get your hopes up; you never know where a job will become available. Keep it up; maybe you will get that job.
